Cichlid Identity

Postby qbbull » Wed Dec 21, 2011 7:37 pm

I need to identify what the LFS sold me as Rainbow Cichlid.

I have 2 rainbow which have happily paired up but the other cichlid looks nothing like them. What is it ?

I am unable to updoad a photo onto the forum . What do i need to do to show you the picture so you can see it .

Thanks

glen

You can use a photo hosting site like Photobucket, upload your photos to that and then copy and paste the IMG code into your post.

I posted your pic in my home forum and they are stumped too. General consensus is it is a hybrid, possibly salvinii x acara. Not an acara or a jewel cichlid or, as one suggested, a Nicaraguan.
You say it was sold as a rainbow cichlid. These are Herotilapia multispinosa. It could have some of that in it but crossed with something else as well.

It looks like a juvenile Protomelas taeniolatus (Red Empress)

No probs, it was a bit tricky because of the colour morphs but not many of the Haps have the black lines and yes it is a stunning fish
