Whey do snails do inside a tank will they harm my fish eg larger gibby.

No they wont harm the fish, but if they take hold they will slowly take over the tank, they can get into the tank through putting in live plants or on wood, you can get snail treatments, but the best answer are certain fish that will do the job for you.

the best answer to dealing with snails is to keep your feeding to a minimum. If you over feed the snails will populate the tank.
Some snails do well in a tank eating algae you wouldnt be able to get to during routine cleaning.
