Fighter and Oxygen

Postby First_Fish » Sat Sep 17, 2011 11:24 pm

After setting up our new tank and loosing a few fish due to newbie lack of research, we are looking at getting a fighter to brighten the tank up a bit.

I have read on a different website that fighters dont like too much oxygen from an airstone. We have a filter/pump that can be adjusted to only create a small 'disturbance' at the surface to get some oxygen in to the water. We also have 4 plants which should introduce a bit of oxygen in the tank. Would these conditions suit the fighter?

Siamese fighters breath via a labrynth organ. This means that the take almost all of their oxygen in from the surface of the water not from the water itself. So having an airstone wont affect the fighter! They dont like fast flows as the find it difficult to swim with their large fins as it is! They like large leaved plants so they can 'hang' around on them to rest. So yeah, dont worry about the oxygen levels for a fighter! What other fish have you got in there? What size is your tank?

It's a 64l tank. We have friendly fish, teteras, herlequin, 2 mollies and an alge eating loach.

I cant see there being a problem with having a betta in there! Although all have different personalities so what works for one might not work for another! Keep a close eye on it for the first few days as some fish cannot resist nipping at betta fins! Even your more placid fish like the mollies :innocent: ! Let us know how you get on! :D

How many of those other fish do you have? You don't want to overstock. What sort of tetras? They can be fin nibblers.
