Which filter to buy (help please!)

Postby hannibal1987 » Tue Jul 24, 2012 3:34 pm

I am a complete newbie with a 95 litre tank, the filter that came with the tank is little noisy for my liking. I have been looking around on forums and the aquaclear 50 seemed the best, however I cannot find one for sale in the UK and it would cost a fortune to ship it from the U.S. the other alternative seems to be the Fluval 106 external filter. The shop where I am going to purchase it is trying to sell me the Fluval 206 external filter. Are they trying make me spend more money (another £10) or would the 206 be more appropriate for my tank.

Thankyou for any help.

There's more media in the 206 and 20% more flow, so more room for bacteria, less frequent cleaning and better re-oxygenation. With 96 litres being at the upper end of the recommendation for the 106, it's not an unreasonable suggestion IMO. I would go for the 206 if they were my options.

thankyou, it sounded reasonable, I just wasn't sure if they were taking advantage of my naivety.

Do check the dimensions in relation to your cabinet though, allowing for the taps on top.

i would go for the 206 too......i have a 205 and 405.....excellent filters...quiet and reliable...

if think the extra tenner will be the best tenner you ever spent...if the 06's have the ability to control the flow ( as the 05'S ) have..you will be able to control the flow, based on your tank and your fish selection...

loads of space for media in these filters...but i have madfe up most of the media myself..used pond filter sheets, cut to size.this has saved me a fortune.

they dont cost a lot and dont (run out/fall apart).dead easy to wash out with tank water.i also have ceramic rings in the filter too..

good luck, but as said...go for the 206....you wont regret it :)
