overstocking

Postby j0jo » Tue Sep 11, 2012 11:01 am

having just bought a 65 litre tank(tropical) ,we set it up and waited four days before putting fish in it . on my return from work last night my better half had bought 21 fish (neon, molly, guppies) i was just wondering if this was too many to start with as 4 fish have died in the last 12 hours . new to fish keeping so any advice would be more than welcomed thanks

Way to many fish to put into a new tank. You should had 2-3 fish at a time wait a week or 2 and then add a couple more.

Doing all at once will cause massive water problems and ammonia, Nitrite levels which will kill the fish.

So do a large water change asap with dechlorinated water and then see about returning some fish

If that is not an option, I would suggest buying a liquid test kit then you can see exactly what the water is doing and water change accordingly (to keep the toxins down) whilst the tank 'cycles'

Gosh that's really bad of a fish shop selling that many fish in one go without asking about the tank, how long it had been set up etc! Hope you get it sorted out and don't lose more fish but I had problems with just 3 fish to start with and 1 died due to high ammonia levels when the cycle kicked off.
