25 Gallon/97 Litre Community tank overstocked?!?!

Postby Chloe.Andrews95 » Wed Oct 10, 2012 4:36 pm

Hi, I have a 25 gallon/97 litre community tank set up which I am planning to stock in the next couple of months. Would these fish be okay, or would it be overstocked?? It is a fairly well planted tank, with soft to mildy hard water conditions. These are the fish I was thinking of introducing:

6 Panda Corydoras Catfish
6 Neon Tetra
8 Harelquin Rasbora
1 Bolivian Ram Cichlid
1 Honey Gourami

If this would be overstocked would it be a good idea to either replace the Harlequins with another shoal of six tetra species or to just up the neons to 10?

Any advice would be great, thanks! :D

Hi.
I'm no expert, and I'm sure someone will correct me but the old school rule of thumb was always 1" of fish per gallon. The combined length of those fish is a bit more than 25", so it would be a little over stocked.
But saying that, you'd probably be fine with that amount of fish as long as your filtration is good, addition of fish was staggered over a couple of months, and regular water changes are carried out.

The 1" per fish is old and does not factor in the variables.
Water surface is important. If your tank is a wide rectangle that is good. If it is a tall narrow rectangle, it is not so good as you can't stock it with so many, or as many different species.
Hopefully you will be adding those fish over more than a 2 month period.
Personally, I would go for 1 shoaling species, not 2.
Corys and rams need a mature setup so I would add them last, after at least 3 or 4 months.

Thanks guys!

I've decided to go with just the one shoal - a larger groups if the Rasboras. :)
I will be adding them over at least two months, the tank is currently full of goldfish which I'm rejoining this week and replacing everything inside other than the water, so I'm hoping it won't take long to get the water right.
Thanks again :)

I cycled my African tank with goldfish. One it had cycled I turned the temp up and threw the goldfish out in the pond. With goldfish in there already, your filter will be cycled :D

Thanks, that's great news! Wasn't sure if it world work that way, I'll just be sure that all the mess from the goldfish is cleaned out and then heat it up. :)
