That buzzing/vibrating thing??

Postby crazydaizy » Fri Nov 02, 2012 12:06 pm

My daughter is at Uni so I am in charge of looking after the Tropical Fish tank.

There's a buzzing vibrating thing in there. Some kind of air "stone" or something (sorry I'm hopeless as I'm new to all of this so can't remember names of stuff) it's attached to something outside of the tank that buzzes and vibrates in a VERY annoying way. I have it wrapped in a towel but I can still hear it.

Is this normal?

Yes, it's the air pump, turn it off if it's that bad

Never use them myself, but have read plenty about peoples annoyances with the humming/buzzing

Hooray I must be learning something, I got that one right, to be honest I would love to have an air stone in our tank, purely for effect, but I have heard people say about the vibration and noise.

What type of filtration is the tank? if its undergravel don't turn off the airpump. I have an airpump thats not too bad with a bit of good positioning you can usually get them quieter although they do tend to move, I try to stand them on something such as a book to try and quieten the sound, although I accept there is no helping some, which is why one of mine is in the back room :)

Valid point, but I was assuming not as an 'air stone' was mentioned

i use a piece of old carpet underlay to sit the air pump on,this stops the majority of the noise. 8)

try hanging it on a hook so its not touching anything to vibrate..having it wrapped in a towel cant be good for it you dont want it over heating

I have mine sitting on a folded up towel, I used a freshly washed towel so that its nice and soft and fluffy for extra dampening. Also find with mine that depending how they are sitting, the electrical cable, the back valve, bleed screw and air pipe can carry vibrations onto whatever surface they are sitting on and also sometimes need dampening.
