B&Q Pea Gravel

Postby Alive_Inside » Mon Jan 14, 2013 11:54 am

It's been a while since I posted on here as I've had furniture rearranging issues!

My Juwel Rio 180 is now ready to be set up. My stepdad has been kind enough to give me 2 big bags of pea gravel (decorative gravel) from B&Q. The problem is that I'm hearing mixed reports as to whether or not this is safe. At this precise moment in time he is "washing" the gravel and I would feel bad telling him it's no good.

My question is.............is this gravel safe or not? If it's ok to use what is the best way of cleaning it?

Thanks!

Is it safe to wash it with just water or do I need to use some kind of bleach?

Also, is this type of gravel safe for all fish? I read somewhere that bottom dwellers prefer sand. I was thinking of adding play sand (Argos/Toys R Us) with the gravel. Good idea???

Just water, don't use bleach -it's chlorine so then you'd need to neutralise that.

Lots and lots of water is all that's needed to clean the gravel.

If you mix gravel and sand you may end up regretting it. When the two mix it can be a pain in the butt to clean because you need to dig into the gravel and can lose half your sand doing it :?

agree, never ever use any household cleaners in cleaning ya tank or anything in it.

copious water will do you a treat.

argos play sand can be used, needs washing thru tho.

i wouldnt mix gravel or sand either...it just ends up in a mess....

you need to get a tank specific bucket, scourer, never use chemicals...the scourer is for cleaning algae on glass.a non stick pan
one is ideal.but only a brand new and never used for anything else...
