Plant Problems

Postby MichaelFish » Sat Feb 16, 2013 12:41 pm

Ive had my tank set up for about a month now and just have a few Harlequins in it. I thought I was doing everything right but my plants seem to be dead/dying and have quite large amounts of algae on the leaves. Does anyone know why this may be? Thanks

I read, from an earlier post, you have a 64L. When you first set up a tank there is nothing in the way of nutrients for the plants to feed on. These will slowly build up as the tank matures and the fish waste provide natural fertiliser. How the plants cope depends very much on which plants you have. Some are heavier feeders than others. I suggest you try adding some liquid fertiliser and see if that helps.
Most also need a decent depth of substrate so if your base media is too thin, that won't help either.

Thanks very much for your help, my substrate is very shallow so this could be the problem.

5cm of depth in your substrate as a minimum would be good.

a liquid fert should help you...as said there is little for them to feed on at the mo.....even a cheapie from the dreaded PAH should help.

which plants do you have ?,they may need root fert tablets...
