More oxygen is often supplied by rippling, or breaking up, the water surface. You should not need diffusers at all, unless you have medicated a tank. Meds reduce the amount of oxygen, as do high temperatures.

My tank sits at a steady 25 degrees and the filter churns up the surface pretty well

Then getting rid of the air pump and diffuser should not make any difference.

Hi matt...i have just heavily planted my tank..i have at the same time turned off my
Air stone...i didnt want it damaging any leaves..
I kept an eye on the fish for a few days, but they have been fine.
No change in behavior etc etc.

As long as your filter is disturbing the surface sufficently ( as u say yours is )
You will ok to turn em off.. Without detrement to fishes health
As stated keep an eye on em if using meds, but if water change routine
Is sufficent enough to maitain high quality conditions, you should have
Fish that are healthy and disease free...happy days 8)

My air pump sits on carpet too stop the old rattle..carpet/laminate underlay
Is another good one...foam block also.some actually hang theres in the
Cabinet,using string etc etc...

So dont worry, the are not a necessity

mattellis18. is you tank planted? If so having an airpump running will remove any Co2 you have in the tank. Co2 is vital to plant growth. An airpump does absolutely nothing for the well being of the fish. They are purely for show.
