Freezing filter medium

Postby MartinC » Fri Jul 25, 2014 5:12 pm

I've just had a thought, is it possible or practical to freeze filter medium from an established filter?
Would the process kill off the bacteria? if it doesn't I was thinking that at some point in the future either freezing a piece of my filter media or just a good gunk squeeze so that if I ever had a filter failure or other disaster I would have a supply of bacteria to jump start new media.
Has anyone tried this or have any experience or information.
I'm still cycling my filter at the moment so I spend quite a bit of time pondering what is happening in my filter and tank.

Hi,

It wouldn't be very practical for nitrifying bacteria on filter media unfortunately.

It is possible to store live bacteria by freezing if they are prepared in the right way, but this is a laboratory process really. Usually they are frozen rapidly, such as with liquid nitrogen, to minimise damage to the bacterial cells - not something you'd be doing at home!

Was Just an idea, just goes to show there is no such thing as original thought.
I think I'll just go back to watching my empty tank, ( well apart from an increasing number of snails).

It's actually in theory a good idea, just often the practical nature doesn't pan out how you first think!

I wondered why no one had suggested it before
