Varying pH

Postby MartinC » Sun Aug 03, 2014 4:57 pm

I'm Currently 35 days into a fish less cycle, Fluval Rio 125l, sand substrate, a few rocks, plant pots and bogwood. Planted with about 15 fast growing plants.
The cycle is going well, dosing to 3ppm ammonia and this is being converted to 5ppm Nitrates in about 24 hours. (not far off now I hope).
My question is why is my pH changing so much, it can vary from 7.4 - 8.0 in 24 hours, is this because of the Nitrites and will it stabilise when the cycle is complete?

Are you measuring at the same time of day each time?

Some variation throughout the day is normal in a planted tank (or even one with just algae) due to CO2 use by plants.

Just looked back over my records, I have been testing about 10pm every evening and those test results are pretty stable 7.6-7.8, Ive had a few days off work and been testing mid afternoon and it's those results that are varying. Looks like you've solved the mystery, Thanks Rockfish, never realised it could vary so much during the day.
