swollen guppy pls help

Postby cheapchickens » Fri Apr 13, 2012 10:20 pm

Hi,

Just noticed my guppy is severely swollen on his belly area. He was fine this morning. Behaviour is still normal, however, he was swimming on the surface yesterday (not sure if this has any relevance but thought I'd mention it) He appears to be normal, just perhaps a little slower than usual.

Do I need to remove him from my tank?

I can't seem to attach the photo does anyone know what file type it has to be?

Many Thanks

to post a picture you need to upload it to a hosting site such as photobucket or imageshack first, then post the link on here

Hi

Going on from this, I've got the same issue, a few of my guppys have had a swollen belly just under it's mouth, I've lost 5 guppys to this in the past week.

I do regular water changes and PH is stable. How can I prevent this? It's only my guppys which are being affected, I have 4 other fish and 1 snail

Hopefully the picture will work

Many thanks
Andy

hi, just looked at your pic and its what my guppies look like too. one passed away on sunday but i didn't think he had a swollen belly. both were not very active as they normally are and spending a lot of time near the surface. I have since treated with eSHa 2000 and he seems a bit more active. and also fed less protein, what are their diets? Hope you get it sorted.

All the guppys have now died, all from the same issue. I got some anti bacterial solution and treated the tank, tested the water again and have the following

PH 7.6
Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrite 1-2ppm
Nitrates 40-50ppm

Andy, sorry to hear about your Guppies, best do an immediate water change, a NitrIte reading of 1-2ppm although it may not seem a lot is quite high. NitrIte can be toxic in even small amounts

Yes i have had the same problem too, lost all 7 guppies.
all other fish in tank are ok, but found that once they become ill the other fish will tail nibble.
I found today that my german blue ram will also bite and try to eat him as this fish is also carnivorous.

I do a 25% water change each week.
