3 danios lost! Help

Postby Viccianddave » Wed Sep 12, 2012 6:24 pm

Hi first post, we're completely newto fish keeping. Have 190 litre tropical tank been set up for about 10 weeks now. Our first fish we bought were six danios on the advice that they were hardy and would kick start filter. On getting them home we noticed one had one eye but seemed fine in all other aspects. We started adding more fish tetras,Guarmis . Approx 4 weeks after the Danio with one eye died no obvious symptoms just one morning dead. A few weeks after we noticed the Danios had sligty red gills, and ones body almost looked like it was disintegrating and he was staying at top, died. We then went to where we bought from and they prescribed anti internal bacteria we have treated twice and all seemed good none of the other fish seem affected. This morning all fish fine this afternoon another danio loss of balance same looking skin, one eye, gasping and one of the guarmis trying to eat it.
We do weekly 25% water change weekly checks on levels, nitrite 0, nitrate we think 40 though hard to though to tell on chart could be between 40-80.

It's really strange that only affected danios and it's the three of zebra we still have 3 golden which seem ok though still slightly red in gills. Hard uk know what is normal and not.

We've just done another water change and are going to treat again. Any advice really appreciated we don't want to lose any more fish.

Thanks

Red gills is normally a sign of high ammonia, it will be ammonia burning the gills. Your nitrate also seems a bit high, should be around 20ppm

Hi thanks for your reply.

The amonia seems fine its always been between 0-0.25, on testing last night was 0.25 - we have the full testing kit (not strips)

We understand the nitrate is a little high and will try and get this down

Hopefully we won't have any more casulties
