Platy

Postby Kimothy » Sat Nov 03, 2012 7:36 pm

We have a Red Mickey Mouse platy that has started gasping with a very open mouth and his bottom lip looks big/fat. But no visible signs of cotton mouth or mouth rot, he's not taking food but is swimming around when he's not hiding which he is doing a lot. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

We regularly test, results are:

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 40ppm
pH 7.4

We have just done a partial water change and change roughly 20% every week

We have searched to see what this might be but there seems to be no clear ideas, some possibilities for symptoms seem to be bacterial infection or gill flukes.

Any suggestions as what this could be and best treatment would be appreciated.

What else is in the tank? Sounds like he could have been injured.

3 female platy
4 danios
2 apistogramma
3 corydoras
3 yo yo loaches
10 tetras
4 amano shrimp
7 red cherry shrimp

Before we bought each type of fish we confirmed the compatability within a community tank with our lfs

Compatibility of species is all very well but it does not take into consideration male territory disputes or fighting over the alpha position. Both are common in "community" set-ups.
What sort of tetras and what size is the tank? The smaller the tank the more disputes you will have due to lack of space.
I still suspect an injury. It may have been frightened and rammed into something, not necessarily hurt by another fish.
