dwarf gourami problem

Postby jennifer o » Sat Dec 08, 2012 7:25 pm

had my gourami about 6 months now, just noticed tonight around her anus is very black, and it looks like a very large black poop is stuck, slighty coming out.

she seems okay, swimming around feeling things with her tentacles but im very worried.

could this be constipation?

Defrost a frozen garden pea remove the outer skin, it is a good laxative for fish, can you isolate fish then you can see if it eats and more important if it gets rid of blockage.

Remove the plant (I assume you have) and don't feed anything but pea. It will eat it eventually. Only has to nibble enough to clear it, not the whole pea.

well shes finally cleared the blockage.

her vent though is about 4 times the size it should be and the poop that came out was about 4 mm accross and 1 cm long

it was an awfully hard large poop and a lot.

im not sure why its happened now plus she has a gap now where this has come out.
its not bleeding or anything, just put some melafix in for her.
you heard anything like this before?

I imagine it will take some time for the vent to go back to normal size (assuming it will). Be very careful what you feed for a while. Avoid pellet types and go for live foods, flake, or fine grain that the fish will be able to digest and pass easily. Give time for the inflammation to settle.
