Zebra loach white spot / ich?

Postby peter212693 » Mon Mar 11, 2013 12:13 am

Hi all,

I spotted tonight one of my zebra loaches has about a dozen white spots in a small area on his side and back. No other fish have any spots at all. Could it be anything else other than white spot? I have only had it once before early on when introducing some neons but never had anymore trouble.

I have not made any changes or additions to the tank at all it just seems to have come out of nowhere

Should I start my treatment of Protozin at half dose?

Thanks

EDIT:

I have just done water tests and showing fine:

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 30-40

I would not add anything yet. Since your water tests are good I would keep them that way and keep a close eye on the affected fish. If it shows to be spreading, then treat. That fish may be old, ill, or injured so showing signs of stress as a result. Are the fins clamped at all?

No he's perfectly normal. Playing around with the other zebras and when I fed them he was fighting for food with the rest.

I will keep an eye on him :)

Ok everyone I managed to get some shots with my big lens (Even if it did take half an hour!), what do you think?

Still no signs of it on any other fish I could see.

Good pics as they are hard to get shots of! Looks a lot like white spot doesn't it?
I guess they are not salt tolerant either otherwise I would suggest raising the temp and adding salt. Might be safer to do the half dose treatment.
Some of your fish may not appreciate higher temps either :-(

Its wierd though as he seems totally unaffected and there isnt a single spot on any other fish. I even have a bristlenose plec and she seems fine too, no spots at all. Could it be anything other than white spot?

I had it early on and there where two or three fish with 2-3 spots and they where doing a lot of flashing but hes not, nor are any others :(

I guess it is possible he has a slight infection that is not able to take hold because water conditions are too good. Perhaps keep an eye on him and not do anything unless spots spread (either on him or to other fish). He might fight it off without intervention.
I am not sure what else it could be.

Thanks, I just dont want to add meds if its not needed and stress out the other fish causing more issues. My tank is around 24-25'C how long would it normally be before the start to drop of him and start to take hold of others if it is white spot?

This is from a friend of mine advising someone else on ich - in reference to him using Wunder Tonic...
Whitespot or ich has a 7 day cycle so it is important that you continue the treatment until 7 days after the last spot is seen. After your second dose miss a day and then do a 25% water change and begin the treatment again.
So dose day 1 & 3, on day 5 do a 25% water change and dose, then a dose on day 7. Repeat until no spots are seen for a week and keep an eye on it for another week afterwards. It will speed the cycle up if you can turn your temperature up to 28 degrees.

I thought the above may be helpful if you do end up having to medicate. Not sure if you have Wunder Tonic over there. It consists of 1.5% methylene blue, .1% malachite green, .05% acriflavine, .04% quinine, in aqueous solution.

Thanks again,

I will keep an eye on it and as soon as it spreads (hopefully it wont!) I will start to treat.
