house keeping platys lol

Postby Darryl1984 » Sat Oct 12, 2013 10:46 am

Ive noticed thats since my two platys have settled into there new tank they seem to be constantly pecking at the plant leaves and the other decor in the tank. Its quite cool to watch and im wondering if they are keeping the tank clean or feeding or is this a sign of stress. The two of them do it together.

Cheers.

Fish graze. They will be eating minute algae on the plants. Since it is a new tank there is little else for them to eat, apart from when you feed them, until it matures.

Thanks for the reply. I'm guessing I don't need to worry about them being over fed the. The tank is pretty clean.

You do have to worry about overfeeding as it will rot in the tank and cause the ammonia and other nasties to rise and possibly reach toxic levels.

At the moment they are being fed lightly as the tank is still pretty new.

What I was meaning is if they at nibbling all day and then I feed them each morning, does that mean there will be getting the equivalent of two meals. I understand more waste mean for toxins which I'm monitoring daily.

Thanks.

Many species of fish always nibble, whether they are fed regularly or not. They will not be getting enough off the plants for it to be considered a second meal.
