Easter weekend

Postby Carylnz » Thu Mar 28, 2013 10:41 pm

Grant and I are currently on board the Aratere (pronounced Ah rah tier ree and means "quick path" in maori) interisland ferry bound for Napier in the North Island. We are going to a national MX5 car rally. Hopefully the crossing will be smooth once we are out of the Marlborough Sounds and into Cook Strait!
It takes 3hrs 20 minutes to cross between islands. The first hour is in the Sounds, another hour or so in the strait, then the last hour getting through Wellington Harbour.
We are travelling in style today as we were given a complimentary ticket to the private area so have fancy seating, no screaming kids, free food, drink, and internet, and much nicer toilets. There is a private deck too so might sit outside in the sun later to eat lunch. 8)

I'm not jealous, honestly I'm not. Seriously, I really don't mind being cold and I do appreciate that the sun was shining in Wales, and the temperature reached 8 degrees even if there was a chill factor making it feel colder, today. I really am glad I looked at the link to see how wonderful the other half of the world looks.

It's not working, I can't quite convince myself.

We got costumes (late 1920's era) to match our 1928 Chrysler while in Napier (known as the Art Deco capital of the world)

Image

Napier is called this because it was hit by a 7.4 earthquake in 1931. It wiped out most of the city - half by the quake itself and the other half from the fires it started! As it had to be totally rebuilt, they did it in the "new" Art Deco style (NZ was 10 years behind the rest of the world when it came to architectural fashion). There are many different Art Deco styles and paint jobs everywhere and it is an interesting place to visit.

At least over there you guys get the chance to have the roof's down on your cars, does make me chuckle over here when you see people with their roof's down & they are then dressed as if they are going to the north pole to stay warm but are determined to make the most of the little sunshine we've had
