Can Parrot Fish share a tank with other breeds?

Postby Annabel1313 » Fri Sep 09, 2011 8:57 pm

Hi, I have a communal 200 litre tropical tank with dalmation mollies, a pot bellied molly, zebra loaches, green cat fish, sword fish, black widow tetras and neon tetras. I am interested in buying two parrot fish. Could I add them to my tank (and then as the parrot fish grow, rehome the other fish) :? or do I need to set up a new tank for them seperately? I have read that due to the breeding of Parrot fish, they are limited to how wide they can open their mouths therefore are unable to eat other fish that are obviously larger than they can bite.

As they are man made hybrids, it is hard to say since they are all crossed with different species. Some are more vicious than others.
Personally I would keep the natural fish you have and not buy the others. If people did not buy such monstrosities, perhaps others would stop cross breeding unsuitable species :(

I don't really have a problem with man made breeds, unless it produces a trait which is detrimental to the fish or breeds some kind of Frankenfish!

I dont really understand the hate on parrot fish, some can be pretty, i would have a pair aslong as they are 'natural' coloured
anyway
if you really want parrot fish make sure you have enough space they are generally unable to eat small fish due to thier mini mouths. also if you buy a dyed one i will chase you and dye you green :)

Just for clarity - Do you mean true parrot fish, or the bright orange hybrid fish?

I've recently bought a pair of hybrid parrots and placed them in a communial tank. Among others there is convicts in this tank and it seems as if a parrot and a convict are sharing a nest. I would like to know if cross breeding can occur between the convict and parrot?
