Stocking suggestions for 5 ft 400l aquarium

Postby shrimpgirl » Thu Nov 17, 2011 5:22 pm

I've recently bought a 5' X 2' x 2', 400l tank. It's beautiful and I'm a very happy bunny. I have plenty of ideas of the kinds of fish I'd like but wondered what you guys would do with it. Any suggestions? I like catfish, rope fish, puffas among other. Be interested in what you would do with it though

Over the time I have had my Rio 400 I have been through many combinations of fish and settled with keeping a few large types.

I have 1 plec
1 x ornate bichir
1 x senegal bichir
1 x jack dempsey

Going for large fish can cause headaches when you want to add something (as you normally have to buy them when they are small, which make them a snack for the larger fish!) but overall I am happy to have a few large fish in a large tank. It does make head-counts easier

There are other options and the final choice is yours, a large tank of colourful small fish is also mesmerising.

I'm gonna be biased here & say Mbuna, a big busy tank stocked with colourful cichlids is a great sight

I've always wanted a jaguar cichlid, but my 4ft just isnt big enough for even one really. While it would fit, it wouldnt be fair imo.

I just can't afford a large tank anytime in the foreseeable future.

If I had a large tank like that, I'd be going for the larger cichlids, with the striking colours, but then again I quite like the constant activity of a large community tank, with a hundred fish in or so constantly moving..

4ft tropical tank closed down due to building work

Planned Amazon catfish tank, and the tropical community brought back up.
