Assassin snails

Postby Avirosa » Sun Mar 04, 2012 4:03 pm

Hi folks, I have an assassin snail in my 65l tropical tank, have a few questions about the little tinker...

1. I also have a 25l unheated tank with danios and WCMM and lots of snails. Can assassin snails survive in unheated tanks?
2. Can assassin snails eat snails larger than themselves?
3. If I was to get another, would they breed rapidly like common snails?

Thanks
Tony

I don't know about coldwater tanks, but if you get another assassin snail for your tropical tank they certainly WILL breed! But at least they won't eat the plants and they will keep the population of other snails well under control.

assasin snails dont breed like other snails they need to be a male and a female unlike alot of other snail species and also lay eggs in the singular resulting in 10 or 20 single eggs rather than hundreds also out of 20 prob only 6 or 7 will survive and then maybe only 2 or 3 reaching adulthood in a community tank i have a mating pair and even after 2 yrs and many eggs laid i only have about 4 or 5 in the tank :) also they will work as a team to bring down a larger snail or other mollusc :)
