Internal Filter - Cartridges

Postby AlanTh » Tue May 22, 2012 10:47 pm

I've had an internal filter running for about nine months now, and as the flow reduced, the time came to open up the filter and do a squeeze on the cartridges.

I was quite surprised to see just how little filter media was actually in the cartridges. Here is the question - wouldn't it be better to remove the cartridges completely and replace with just sponges, or some other media? I feel sure that more media could be included if not in the form of a cartridge. Is it possible to buy sheets of the sponge, or polyfibre, or something, and cut to size?

I do not like filters with rigid sided cartridges as they hold so little media. I tend to swap out for some sponge (you can cut it to fit) and/or ceramic noodles.

That's exactly what I thought ....

Can anyone recommend a supplier (internet), in the UK for the sponge media. This would be a sort of bulk purchase, not specific sized sponges.

Not all sponges are made equal and many ordinary 'household' sponges will not do the job.
