what dose activated carbon do and were do you put it i.e in ur filter or the tank

You put it in the filter and it grabs and holds on to some chemicals from the water as it passes.

It doesn't have much effect on small molecules like nitrates and ammonia but it does collect large molecules like tannins, e.g. those from bogwood that stain your water brown. So it keeps the water colourless. It is also used to remove medications from the tank when you are finished with them because they tend to have large molecules too.

It lasts about four weeks, then it gets full up and you need to change it if you want it to continue working. The cheapest way to use it is to buy granules and put them in a fine mesh bag. Some filters have special carbon sponges but these work out more expensive.

ok thanks :D its just my new tank had the filter and i littel green mesh bag saying activated carbon and i wasent sure what ity done but ill prob replace it cause i dont know how long its been used in the pump for :)
