Thermometer.

Postby cobden28 » Sat May 18, 2013 10:54 pm

Which is the best type of aquarium thermometer, the old-fashioned type with a bulb of mercury that's attatched by a sucker to the inside of the tank or the strip type that's stuck to the outside of the tank?

And where in relation to the heater is it best to site the thermometer?

Best thermometer is one that is on the inside. The outer strips can be affected by the room temp as well.
Site your thermometer as far away from the heater as possible so you know the water is circulating and heat is getting to all areas of the tank.

So the internal thermometer is the right one then; with the heater located in the rear right hand corner of the tank the best place for the thermometer is on the rear left corner of the tank?

I would put it left front so you can actually read it easily. It is not vital where you put it, just not actually above the heater itself.
Remember heat rises so if you have it lower in the tank you may get a fractionally lower reading than if it is at the top. I doubt most aquarium thermometers are that accurate though
I use external electronic ones. The digital unit sits on top of the tank and the probe is in the water. They are accurate and cheap these days.

I think you are confused between a thermometer and a thermostat brodie.
A thermometer is a separate bit of equipment that measures the water temperature. The dial on the heater sets the internal thermostat to the temperature you require
