Plants

Postby Gary fergusson » Mon Feb 18, 2013 6:38 pm

Just wondering what you people use to help keep your plants healthy and green? Mine seem ok for a few weeks but then gradually start to go brown and transparent. At the moment I am just adding some Nutrafin plant Gro on my weekly water changes. I have recently left the light on an extra couple of hours a day to 7 hours but am now getting algae on the plants and decor. I just have a single 30w T8 light tube.
Thanks for any help
Gary

Oh and don't ask me what the plants are! Bit of a mixture of large and small leaved :o

How long has the tank been running?
What are the dimensions?
How deep is the substrate?
What is the substrate?

Hi. Thanks for the reply.
Tank been running about 9 - 10 months (cycled with ammonia)
4 foot by 1 foot, 18 inches high
Substrate is rounded gravel at around between 1 and a half to 2 inches deep.

Thanks

Is one of those plants an Amazon sword? If so, they are very heavy root feeders and I would say you need to add more fertiliser. It may also be taking the nutrients from the other plants.

it worked..... ...took me ages to get pics up at first fella...

the plants you having trouble with are amazon swords......heavy root feeders.....mine looked the same after awhile.

assuming you have no shrimp in your tank, you can use any fert tablets you want....

i would trim of the damaged leaves as near to the base of the stem as possible,to limit any rotting polluting ya water.

then get some root tabs in the gravel near ya plants.within a few weeks you should see an improvement in growth and colour.
you will notice the little leaves springing up at the bottom of the plant as it grows bigger, taller and denser....

i bought my ones on ebay,2 for about £2.35 inc postage...from fishy-buisness2012....2 cones are decent size and should last about 6 months....

i must learn to type faster...carylnz shot me down in flames......

you might wanna split that plant into 2 groups,as it dense already, this will allow them room to thrive when the root tabs kick in and the plant feeds greedily on the new food source for em..

just a thought,tho not essential

glad i could help with the uploading of pics ...

Thanks for the reply people. Looks like they are amazon swords carylnz! I will get some fert tablets ordered ASAP. What about light duration do you think 7 hours is enough?? I'm thinking of investing in a new hood which will hold 2 light tubes??

my lights are on a timer.....come on at 11 and off at 10......

i would increase the time to 8 hours and see what that does....shouldnt cause any algae outbreak with a small shift in the photo period.i only have a single tube at the mo,but it seems to be enough...3 ft tube..if you do decide to upgarde to a twin light system,it would be a good idea to use a standard daylight bulb and another plant growth tube, designed to emit the specific light parameters for growth...havnt used one myself but will when i upgrade my tank...heard and seen good results with them from others..

root tabs defo the way to go tho....and nice big cone/tabs under that bunch of amazons will make a huge difference in a few weeks..

another way is a lot more hassle, but you could strip ya tank and add substrate for plants then put the gravel on top of that...tetra do 1 for example, but as said it means stripping ya tank.....best give the tabs a trial first

Yeah kind of wish I put some sand down now, but I can imagine it being a very messy job doing it now. I've just ordered some tabs from the seller you mentioned so will give that a go before I take any other action. I'll hold off on a new hood for a while, but I am in need of a new one as this one is starting to fall apart a bit :o
Again thanks

I didn't shoot you down Ade, we were in agreement and I actually got the plant right too!
You gave a lot more helpful information than I did as I have never actually had one of these plants myself and have never used fertilisers.
