Regular pruning of some plants makes them grow bushier, rather than end up as tall, thin, and stringy specimens. The amount of light you have can also affect their growth.

I don’t think that you would need to strip the tank in order to have sand under your gravel. Given that the sand is a smaller particulate than the gravel, it should be possible to empty a container of washed sand on to the gravel and it will work is way down with a little gentle agitation. You could build up the layer of sand over time.

You may care to experiment with an old glass jar.
