Java ferns

Postby prussell » Sun Sep 29, 2013 6:31 pm

I was recently advised by a dealer that Java ferns should be restricted to one plant per aquarium as they produce a toxin that can be harmful to fish in large doses. However, I have been unable to find confirmation in any of my books. Does anyone have knowledge or experience in this field?

hi
I have kept java fern with a wide variety of fish over the years and have never experienced any issues with toxins being released, they do have an unpleasant taste to fish that like to eat plants.

I have seen (and had) a number of tanks with many Java fern plants in them with no effect on fish. It is a new one on me!

Many thanks, that’s the re-assurance I was seeking.
