Nitrogen Cycle not starting ?

Postby Clivebham » Sun Nov 03, 2013 10:33 pm

Hi,

Had the aquarium up and running for a couple of months now. 90 litre tank. 6 neon tetras and 7 harlequin Rasbora.

Setup went ok. Nothing abnormal. No cloudy water etc. but on testing the water in the tank. Ammonia levels never seem to peak above 1.0 ppm ph remains constant at 7.4 but get no nitrite or no nitrate readings at all. Always 0 ppm. Does the ammonia levels have to spike higher for nitrite/nitrate conversion ?

Many thanks

If done correctly, a cycle is nice and smooth with no, or little, discernible spikes. I would expect some nitrate to be showing though.
Have you any live plants?
1.0 is high, I thought, for ammonia. Are you sure you don't mean 0.1?

Hi,

No. Have no live plants. According to the instructions with test kit, 1.0 ppm

Ideally ammonia should be 0 or at least no higher than .25
1.0 is high and the tank should be cycling.
Can you see any build up of stuff on the filter sponges?
