The cichlidae are a large family of fishes, comprising more than a thousand species. Most of those popular in the hobby are found in Central and South America, and Africa. There is great variation in body shape and size across the family. Many cichlids practice parental care of the eggs and fry, and are popular for their interesting behaviour as well as their visual appeal.
