Tank 11: 41 gal Newt tank

This tank houses Spanish ribbed newts, Pleurodeles waltl.

Tank Size (LxWxH) 48x15x18" (122x38x46cm)
Volume Nominal: 41 imp gallons/50 US gallons/190 litres
Actual: 35 imp gallons/42 US gallons/159 litres
Filtration Eheim internal power filter.
Heating Heated room
Lighting Medium - 1 x 42"/38W Arcadia Original Tropical fluorescent tube.
Substrate Thin layer of aquarium sand.
Decor Rocks, live plants including Egeria, Anubias, Crinum and Java Fern. "Turtle Dock" for land area.
Background Juwel black 3-D effect structured background.
Water parameters Temp=26oC ; pH=7.0-7.2 ; GH=4 ; KH=3
25% water change every week.
Stock 6 Spanish/Iberian ribbed newts, Pleurodeles waltl
Feeding Chopped mussel, whitebait and prawn, earthworms, bloodworm, catfish pellets.

These newts are almost fully aquatic, but like to 'rest' partly on land occasionally, hence I have made use of a floating "Turtle Dock" to provide an area for this. Circulation is minimal, as they prefer gentle water movement. Apart from their decorative function, the plants provide a place for eggs to be laid. Spawning can usually be induced by 'flooding' the tank with a deeper water level.
