Scientific name: | Nandopsis salvini |
Synonyms: | Cichlasoma salvini (old genus name). |
Size: | Up to 6" (15cm) |
Origin: | Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras |
Tank setup: | A reasonable sized tank (3ft/92cm plus) with rocks and wood for cover, and some open space for swimming and displaying. |
Compatibility: | Can be very aggressive, particularly when breeding, but can usually be mixed with other robust cichlids in a large tank. |
Temperature: | 22-26oC (72-79oF) |
Water chemistry: | Neutral to alkaline (pH 7.0-7.5), medium hard. |
Feeding: | Omnivorous, with a preference for larval foods such as bloodworm. |
Sexing: | Males are generally larger, with more intense colouration, although both sexes are very
colourful when breeding. Females may have a darker patch on the dorsal fin. |
Breeding: | A large number of eggs are layed, usually on sloping or vertical surfaces. Both
parents tend the eggs and fry. |
