Common name:Port cichlid, Brown Acara, Port Acara
Scientific name:Aequidens portalegrensis
Synonyms:(none)
Size:6" (15cm) to 8" (20cm)
Origin:Southern Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia.
Tank setup:A larger community tank with good filtration.
Compatibility:Generally peaceful with similar sized tank mates that are not too aggressive.
Temperature:19-24oC (66-75oF)
Water chemistry:Slightly acidic (pH 6.0-7.0), soft to medium hard water.
Feeding:Omnivorous: most foods accepted.
Sexing:The male is noticeably larger and has extended dorsal and anal fins.
Breeding:One of the easiest cichlids to breed, the parents will spawn regularly if good water quality is maintained. Eggs are laid on a pre-cleaned stone and guarded by the parents, who also tend the fry.
